Joe Dirt (2001) is the name of David Spade’s mullet-sporting, acid-washed jeans wearing janitor who only wants to find his long lost parents, having been separated from them at the Grand Canyon when he was just a child. He roams the American heartland looking for them, bouncing around from one misadventure to the next, until he finds himself in La La Land where a mean-spirited shock jock played by comedian Dennis Miller, asks him to come on his show so he can berate him. With newfound fame, Dirt turns the tables and becomes beloved by the city, who admire his rural authenticity. Hard to believe, but fourteen years later, Spade is returning to his titular character for Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, with Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath replacing Kid Rock as one of Joe’s antagonists. But if you want to enjoy turn of the century Spade shirtless, rent the original. In one scene, while working as a carny, he attempts to and succeeds at impressing Jaime Pressly by flexing topless on the Tilt-a-Whirl. Later, he rubs lotion on his bare chest at the bottom of a well for a Buffalo Bill type transvestite in a parody of Silence of the Lambs (1991). David, you dirty dog, you!
