Review

In the New York City milieu as presented by the lens of Hollywood myth-making, an Italian American male has two likely roles. He is either an associate of the Mafia family of organized criminals or he has a connection to the Catholic Church. Tom Berenger, as the heroic leading man of the murder drama Last Rites (1988), is a double winner. By an accident of birth he is Mob-related. By divine vocation he is an ordained foot soldier of Jesus. Neither of these conditions is in contradiction of the other, until the conscience-stricken padre uses his position with the parish to shelter a moll on the lam after her mobster sugar man is killed in his prime. Will sacred vows protect God's servant from his curvaceous charge's devilish wiles? Will you get to see any male skin in a movie about a priest? Yes. When Geno (Robert Corbo) is caught in the act with another man’s wife, he’s got nothing to hide (including his hide).
