Last Summer

Based on the novel of the same name from Evan Hunter, the coming-of-age drama Last Summer (1969) follows Peter and Dan (Richard Thomas and Bruce Davison), two well-to-do adolescents who spend their summer vacation on Fire Island, looking to pass the time with some willing ladies. Thanks to a wounded seagull, the guys cross paths with Sandy (Barbara Hershey), a sexy chick with a heart of gold that works to save the battered bird, and Rhoda (Cathy Burns), a less-than-friendly femme that doesn’t share Sandy’s compassion for wounded animals. As a flirty foursome begins, it quickly ends, thanks to a perverse and violent game of “truth or dare”. If you’re looking for skin, you’ll have to head elsewhere. Bruce Davison manages to briefly tease his tail during an uncool moment of hatred and ignorance. While every dreads the end of summer, you’ll be looking forward to seeing the end of Bruce!
