Biography

The late great Laurence Olivier was one of the greatest actors of all time. That is quite a distinction, but Laurence lives up to that moniker. The English gent who hailed from Dorking in Surrey began his career in the theater where he was SO good at performing Shakespearean monologues that people said he said the lines as if he were thinking them. Hie made his feature film debut back in 1930 when he starred in The Temporary Widow. From there, there was absolutely no stopping this dynamo of English cinema. He is most known for playing dramatic romantic roles like Heathcliff in 1939's Wuthering Heights, King Henry V in Henry V (1944), Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (1940), and most notably as Maxim de Winter in the classic thriller Rebecca. He starred in The Prince and the Showgirl (1957) with Marilyn Monroe, Marathon Man as Szell, Clash of the Titans as Zeus, and his final role as an old soldier in 1989's War Requiem. He had many romances and many rumors circling his life, but we are here to talk about his shocking queer-coded scene in Spartacus. He played Crassus and gets a bath from a servant in a scene. He asks his male servant, who is busy rubbing his chest and shoulders if he likes oysters or snails. He then tells the servant that he likes both oysters and snails. Do you see what he's saying here? Laurence delivered this amazingly sensual admission of bisexuality in a scene about hot Roman gladiators that he should forever be remembered by. No wonder he was the greatest actor to have ever lived!
