Love, medicine and revolution collide in Lovesick, Netflix’s seven-episode Mexican period drama based on Ángeles Mastretta’s acclaimed novel Mal de amores. Even better, the adaptation stays in the family: Mastretta’s daughter, filmmaker Catalina Aguilar Mastretta, directed, produced, and adapted the series. Renata Vaca stars as Emilia Sauri, a fiercely independent young woman growing up in Puebla as Mexico heads into the Revolution. Emilia has little interest in accepting the limited future society has planned for her. She wants to become a doctor, but her professional ambitions become tangled up with two very different men: childhood sweetheart Daniel Cuenca (Juan Pablo Fuentes), an impulsive revolutionary, and Antonio Zavalza (Iván Amozurrutia), a doctor whose preference for peace offers Emilia a very different kind of life. What’s a gurl to do? Both men show their booties, but Juan Pablo Fuentes takes the cake with a half dozen sexy scenes, including plenty of looks at his, well, cake.
