Thanks to the cuteness and comic timing of Ryan Reynolds, you’ll experience laughs and lust while watching National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002). A broad and base comedy of bad manners, this risky romp is disguised as a revisitation of the hallowed college-cutup ground of Animal House (1978). Both movies were produced with the nominal involvement of National Lampoon, and each has a cadre of feckless ne’er-do-wells as the nominal heroes. Van Wilder attempts to elevate its chump savants to a level of philanthropic altruism and plays at being a pat “message” picture with an easily digested moral to the story. That’s the long way to say, if you had hopes of peeping in on some good ol’ college experimentation, you’ll want to point your campus compass elsewhere. Nevertheless, Mr. Reynolds’s rump gives a cameo near the movie’s beginning, but you’d think the filmmakers would learn to shoot around those pesky statutes that are always blocking the below-the-belt shots! Follow your bliss, be true to your heart, and not only will your contemporaries and elders alike respect and admire you, but you might be able to spot some skin. Who could argue with that? Certainly not the eclectic cast which includes Erik Estrada, Lamar Odom, Tara Reid, Sophia Bush, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Tim Matheson, and Daniel Cosgrove. The latter actor bares his chest in bed. Sweet dreams! If that’s not hot enough, Ivana Bozilovic gets an oily massage from a shirtless Kal Penn. When you see his pecs, you’ll be rubbing yourself too!
