Red Rocket (2021)

Red Rocket is the latest critical hit from star indie director Sean Baker - the same man behind Tangerine and The Florida Project. Once again he delivers a quirky slice of downtrodden life - this time in the form of Simon Rex's Mikey. Simon Rex used to be a porn actor in real life, and art imitates life in Red Rocket as Mikey is a former porn star looking to start a new life in his old town in Texas - which he hasn't been back to in seventeen years. Mikey shacks up with his ex and looks for work, but employers are all curious about the massive gap on Mikey's résumé. Once they find out he was doing porn for all of those unaccounted for years, they refuse to hire him. So Mikey gets work selling pot, and one day strikes up a friendship with a teen girl working at a donut shop. She allows Mikey to sell pot around the shop, and the two end up getting the eclair in the donut, if you know what we mean. They have sex. Mikey also strikes up a sexual relationship with his ex that he's living with, and let's just say that his life gets pretty messy.
