Review

Following in the footsteps of 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)—the surprise hit adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the ShrewShe's the Man (2006) updated Shakespeare's cross-dressing comedy Twelfth Night to a modern American high school setting. Amanda Bynes stars as Viola, the star soccer player recently cut from her high school team, whose twin brother Sebastian (James Kirk) just got accepted to a prestigious boarding school. When he skips town to pursue his dream of playing in a band, Viola decides to pass herself off as her own twin brother in order to get on the school's soccer team and get revenge on her old school's team fronted by her ex-boyfriend Justin (Robert Hoffman). While pretending to be Sebastian, Viola falls hard for her roommate Duke (Channing Tatum), the boarding school soccer team's star player, leading to a multitude of awkward situations wherein she seems to constantly forget that she's supposed to be masquerading as a boy. Of course, if you're familiar with the basic story of Twelfth Night, you'll know that everything will eventually work out in the end, even when Duke's feelings get hurt after discovering Viola's ruse. It might hurt your feelings to know that there's no nudity in this flick, but it shouldn't surprise you as this is a teen comedy. There is a multitude of sexy twenty-somethings playing teenagers, however, who appear shirtless in the locker room and on the field, from a pre-fame Channing Tatum to James Kirk, along with Brandon Jay McLaren, Clifton MaCabe Murray, and a host of uncredited extras!
