Review

Mime-turned-comedian-turned-actor and filmmaker Dany Boon stars in the French farce Supercondriaque (2014). The funny film follows Romain Faubert (Boon), an unattached medical photographer who is hopelessly in search of love. But finding the woman of your dreams can be a tall order when you’re a 39-year-old hypochondriac living with your mother (Marthe Villalonga). If that’s not depressing enough, the germophobe’s co-worker Marc (Jonathan Cohen) unexpectedly dies out of nowhere. Luckily, Romain’s best bud, Dr. Dimitri Zvenka (Kad Merad), thinks he has cure for his friend’s hang ups: he must immerse himself in the dating world! With millions of fish in the sea, Romain winds up falling for Dimitri’s revolutionary sister Anna (Alice Pol). The only problem is she thinks he’s the famous freedom fighter Anton Miroslav (Jean-Yves Berteloot). As you can guess, this setup leads to a lot of awkward situations and goofy moments which translate into big laughs. Despite the fact that film critics weren’t wowed by this romantic comedy, movie goers appreciated the leading man’s onscreen assets. Not only was Supercondriaque a box office hit, it over-performed at the spank bank! This is due to a revealing scene that occurs just one minute into the flick. That’s when Monsieur Boon’s buns can be seen thanks to his butt-baring hospital gown. Granted, the flesh flash is fast but that’s what freeze-frame and slow-motion are for. In other words, keep one hand on the remote. What you do with your other hand is up to you. Just remember to say “Merci beaucoup!”
