Review

Based on the John LeCarré novel of the same name, The Constant Gardner (2005) is a thriller that follows Justin Quale (Ralph Fiennes), a bottom-tier British diplomat living in Kenya as he tries to solve the mystery behind the murder of his wife, Tessa ("Best Supporting Actress" winner Rachel Weisz). Tessa was an Amnesty activist with a passion for social justice that ended up in the wrong neighborhood and got shot by a bunch of ruffians looking for cash. At least, that's what Justin is told. In a series of flashbacks, the viewer is shown how Justin and Tessa met and fell in love, but it's not long we start seeing cracks in the official story of Tessa's death. That hot doctor (Hubert Kounde) she was supposedly sleeping with behind Justin's back? He was gay but kept it a secret because that was illegal in Kenya at the time. That pharmaceutical company helping the Kenyans with all that free medicine? They were actually running a secret clinical trial on the unsuspecting public and hiding the mass graves they had to dig when things went wrong. Those people that killed Tessa? They're going to come after Justin if he refuses to stop looking into the conspiracy behind her death! While the film brings its fair share of suspense, there’s not a lot of skin. We get a couple looks at Ralph Fiennes impressive physique as he gets sexy with his wife, but we never get to see the whole thing. Ralph sure lives up to his surname, because he sure is fine! That lean torso is a constant hardener!
