There was probably a better time to be gay than the 1930s, but you wouldn't know it from the hot tail that Ian McKellen's character Jimmy Erskine pulls in the 2024 drama The Critic. Ian plays the titular critic, and he relishes being a grumpy old queen with the power to tank actors and even entire productions. Jimmy is used to holding all the cards, so he's quite out of sorts when the newspaper he works for changes ownership and fires him. A critic without an outlet is a dangerous thing, and soon Jimmy is pulling in all sorts of unsuspecting people in his scheme to get his power back. Jimmy is, as we stated, gay, and he gets his rocks off in some unusual ways! He loves to hire young men for rough trade, and we get to see him partying with a bunch of gays in one scene. There's no nudity here, which is why we have to give the flick a one-star rating. Who's the critic now!
