With four Academy Award nominations, a screenplay by director Orson Welles, and leading man Joseph Cotton, The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) has a lot to brag about. But it doesn’t have the skin that The Magnificent Ambersons (2002) remake does. Inspired by Booth Tarkingtons Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from 1918, this A&E Network movie boasts an all-star cast featuring Dina Merrill, Gretchen Mol, James Cromwell, Jennifer Tilly, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Madeleine Stowe. Under the direction of Alfonso (Like Water for Chocolate) Arau, the story centers around George Amberson Minafer (Meyers). He’s a spoiled and unlikable rich college student who becomes upset when his recently widowed mother (Stowe) rekindles her relationship with Eugene Morgan (Bruce Greenwood), a wealthy automobile manufacturer she left years earlier to marry George’s father. The angry son sets off to sabotage mom’s budding romance, while beginning one of his own with Eugene’s daughter Lucy (Mol). As love plays out, George’s mischievous and bitter ways bring the once great family to financial ruin. Although that’s bad news for the Ambersons, it’s good news for us since we get to see Jonathan donning old school undies. If that’s not arousing enough, the skintastic actor displays his naked T&A! Not to be outdone, Uncle George (William Hootkins) shows off his big hairy chest while soaking in a tub. Rub a dub dub! Whether you like men who are tight and toned like Mr. Rhys Meyers or extra large like Mr. Hootkins, we can agree that the flesh on the Amberson men is magnificent!
