The Spanish Apartment (2002)

French director Cédric Klapisch scored an instant arthouse hit with L' Auberge espagnole (2002), an internationally flavored Gen-Y romantic comedy about a Barcelona apartment that plays host to a clutch of European twenty-somethings. A serious-minded French grad student (Romain Duris), an introspective married woman (Judith Godrèche), a British clown (Kevin Bishop), a sexy ex (Audrey Tautou), and other characters navigate cultural and language divides by humping like rabbits. Klapisch captures the hook-ups in all their giddy glory, opting to allow the cast to play it loose with their clothing. There’s no baguette from Frenchman Duris (sacrebleu!) but we get a good shot of his nicely-rounded croissants. Brit Bishop shows off his well-toned chest, but that’s about it -- unless you can get your hands on the European DVD copy. Rumor has it there’s a quick shot of his banger, no mash. God save the peen!
