From Dustin Lance Black, the Academy Award winning screenwriter behind Milk (2008) comes ABC's When We Rise, a TV mini-series tracking the gay rights movement from 1972 to 2017, when the series debuted. Over the course of eight hours viewers will get episodes from legendary directors like Gus Van Sant, Dee Rees, and Dustin Lance Black himself. The series starts with future NAMES Project AIDS Memorial quiltmaker Cleve Jones (Guy Pearce), former Navy sailor Ken Jones (Michael K. Williams) and future founder of The Women's Building Roma Guy (Mary-Louise Parker) all moving to San Francisco soon after The Stonewall Riots. Roma will get pissed the National Organization for Women will try to kick out the lesbians and decide to start her own gay friendly group, Cleve will become obsessed with trying to get new AIDS treatments into the mainstream as the homophobic public grapples with how much they really care about the gay men dying in droves, and Cleve will try to keep the homophobes from taking over religion. But it's not all about those three. Along the way we'll meet all sorts of A-listers playing gay rights icons like Dylan Walsh playing Aids doctor Marcus Conant, Rosie O'Donnell playing lesbian rights pioneer Del Martin, and Whoopi Goldberg as the first openly gay employee of The San Francisco Health Department, Del Martin. Only seven minutes into the pilot episode we get an eyeful of the shirtless Austin P. McKenzie and Douglas Smith. These two long-haired lover boys share some sensual smooches while lying on the floor. 11 minutes into the pilot we get another look at some mesmerizing man kisses from the juicy, pre-Marvel fame Jonathan Majors and the charming Charlie Carver.
