One of the most acclaimed films of 2022 and one of the most assured directorial debuts of the new millennium, Charlotte Wells' Aftersun (2022) moves seamlessly in and out of the past as Sophie (Celia Rowlson Hall) recalls the last time she saw her father Calum (Paul Mescal). Played as an 11-year old by Frankie Corio, Sophie and her dad vacation at a seaside resort where he often succumbs to the temptations holding him back from being a reliable father to her in the first place. The film is both a loving and bittersweet look at the realization we all make in our lives that our parents were just as clueless as we are, doing the best they could, with an amazing central performance from the always great Paul Mescal! Though not as skinsational as his breakout turn on Normal People, this film does feature the Irish hunk in various states of undress, including a scene where we spy his bare ass while he is found by Sophie passed out face down in bed.
