American Night (2021)

Have you found yourself wondering why more crime thrillers aren't set in the world of high priced contemporary art, then have we got the flick for you! American Night (2021) bills itself as a neo-noir set in that competitive world where artist and art dealer John Kaplan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and his business and romantic partner Sarah (Paz Vega) have trouble keeping his gallery afloat in the increasingly cutthroat industry. Enter Michael Rubino (Emile Hirsch), the shit heel son of a powerful New York crime boss who has just inherited the family business following his father's untimely death. Michael fancies himself a mixed media artist, though, as he experiments with paint, canvas, and bullets to create an entirely new art form. You might have an inkling as to where all of this is headed as John's desperation to keep his business in the black collides with a rambunctious new crime boss with an interest in breaking into the art world. Needless to say, art and commerce make strange bedfellows and it isn't long before John finds himself in even bigger trouble than he was in to begin with, putting the life of Sarah—the only person in the world he cares about—at mortal risk. While this flick is big on action, it's not so big on the kind of action we crave here at Mr. Man! We do get a couple of nice looks at Jonathan Rhys Meyers' bare ass when he and Vega roll around the floor of his art studio having sex and splashing paint all over one another, but that's the extent of the nudity to be found here.
