Atlantis (2013)

Home audiences are bound to get a little wet while watching Atlantis (2013-2015). Not to be confused with the Ukraine drama Atlantis (2020), this British saga combines adventure, romance and fantasy to re-create Greek mythology in a big way on the small screen. As such, the series stars Jack Donnelly as Jason. Folklore says he led the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. Yet this show initially depicts him as a modern-day man on a submarine mission that gets lost under the sea. After the strapping young hunk washes up on the shore of the lost city of Atlantis, he meets and befriends Pythagoras (Robert Emms) and Hercules (Mark Addy). When the three new pals set off on an amazing journey, they (and we) encounter legendary characters such as Medusa (Jemima Rooper), Medea (Amy Manson), and the Minotaur! Throughout its two season run, the show features Alexander Siddig as King Minos, Anya Taylor-Joy as Cassandra, John Hannah as Tychon/Aeson, Joseph Timms as Icarus, Juliet Stevenson as the Oracle, and Ronald Pickup as Orpheus. Needless to say, if you never took a Greek Mythology class in school, all you have to do is check out this production and you’ll be ready to answer any trivia questions on the topic. Alas, even though Atlantis is a fantasy, there’s not much flesh to feed your fantasies. But, at least, Mr. Donnelly treats fans to a view of his shirtless physique in episode 4. Thanks for throwing us a bone. Or should we say boner?
