Beau Is Afraid (2023)

Writer/director Ari Aster made quite a splash with his debut film Hereditary (2018) before unleashing the even more ambitious Midsommar (2019) the following year, and now the master of the macabre tackles the existential comedy with the three hour epic Beau is Afraid (2023). Joaquin Phoenix plays the title character, a man riddled with all manner of guilt and anxiety, most of it stemming from his relationship with his domineering mother (Patti LuPone). Just as Beau is about to embark on a rather pedestrian visit to his mother's house, he instead finds himself besieged on all sides by people who seem to want to actively harm him, including a knife-wielding pantsless Bradley Fisher!

One of this strange film's strangest conceits is that Beau has never orgasmed in his entire life, therefore he sports a pair of bowling ball sized testicles that we glimpse a handful of times during the movie, never in full. When he finally has sex with Parker Posey's character in the final act of the film, we get a good look at his big ol' balls, though they're comically oversized and obviously prosthetic. No wonder Beau is Afraid, can you imagine pushing fifty and never having orgasmed?
