A French repairman named Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) gets a monkey wrench thrown into his mild-mannered existence when he falls for wild woman Betty (Béatrice Dalle) in 37°2 le matin (1986). First charming and then disarming, Betty’s energy and insane exploits soon start to spin out of control. What will happen when the handsy handyman realizes that no amount of tinkering can fix poor Betty’s blue moods? Also known as Betty Blue, the erotic drama also includes Clémentine Célarié, Consuelo de Haviland, Gérard Darmon, Jacques Mathou, and Mr. Anglade’s baguette and buns. Luckily for us, Jean-Hugues is nude one minute into the movie! He then goes full frontal a few minutes later. Needless to say, he flashes his flesh throughout the flick. In fact, his privates also go public at the pic’s 00:20:35, 00:41:58, 01:27:52, 02:01:10, 02:25:00, and 02:47:29 marks. No wonder the movie nabbed nominations for Best Foreign Language Film at both the Oscars and the British Academy of Film Awards. Plus, it wasn’t just a hit with critics since moviegoers loved it too. Based on Philippe Djian’s novel “37°2 le matin” (1985), the French flick was the eighth highest-grossing film in its homeland in 1986. Maybe that’s why other book-to-screen adaptations followed, such as The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), The Scarlet Letter (1995), The Postman (1997), and The Cat in the Hat (2003). Yet all of these pics proved to be box office bombs. No doubt, it’s because they lacked Monsieur Anglade’s je ne sais quoi — and delectable dong!
