In Peter Greenaway’s NC-17 movie The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), the characters indulge in various types of excessive behavior. Every night, crime boss Albert Spica (Michael Gambon) holds court in Le Hollandais restaurant where he and his thugs — Cory (Ciarán Hinds), Harris (Ewan Stewart), Mews (Ron Cook), Mitchel (Tim Roth), Spangler (Gary Olsen), and Turpin (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) — abuse each other, the staff, and anyone else who crosses their paths. Mind you, their idea of abuse goes far beyond anything you can conceive until you see the movie. Just a few minutes into the flick, he and his gang force a bloke (Willie Ross) to strip outside so they can smear his bare body with dog shit and piss on him. Sure, the act is disgusting but it does let us see Willie’s willy! In fact, Mr. Ross also flashes his abs, pubes, sack and ass. Needless to say, Albert’s wife (Helen Mirren) is repulsed by her vulgar spouse. As you can guess, she has a secret affair with a bookish intellectual (Alan Howard) who reads while he eats. Not long after their eyes meet, Mr. Howard drops his boxers to bare his buns, bush and junk while getting it on with a naked Ms. Mirren. In other words, Alan’s privates go public at the movie’s 00:33:29, 00:44:56, 01:14:33, 01:17:12, and 01:18:50-minute marks. While the chef (Richard Bohringer) slices and dices, the wife and her lover make love in the wine and cheese cellar. Bone appétit!
