Castaway (1986)

With The Lair of the White Worm (1988) and The Rainbow (1989), Ken Russell made a star of Amanda Donohoe as well as Oliver Reed via Women in Love (1969), The Devils (1971) and Tommy (1975). But it was Nicolas Roeg who cast the two in Castaway (1986). Not to be confused with Cast Away (2000) or Castaways (2023), this R rated flick is based on Lucy Irvine’s same-named book. It begins when middle-aged writer Gerald Kingsland (Reed) places an ad in a magazine seeking a wife for a year to spend with him on a tropical island. Lucy (Donohue), a young waitress almost half his age, writes back. The next thing you know, the unlikely couple weds and heads to an island off the coast of Australia. Even though the honeymooners are surrounded by beauty, they soon begin to squabble like an old married couple. Indeed, they spend the next twelve months arguing. Plus the inclement weather and starvation doesn’t do much to appease their situation. Per their past films, Amanda and Oliver prove they’re not too shy to shed their threads on camera. As such, Mr. Reed reveals his butt, balls and peen during a hurricane sex scene. According to Variety, “Reed gives the performance of his career as a sexually frustrated middle-aged man in search of sun and sex.” Apparently, he was also searching for his clothes since he spends most of the movie wearing hardly anything.” Who wouldn’t want to be naked on a desert island with Ollie?
