Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019) and the deaths of several heavy hitters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the entertainment juggernaut rolled out some unusual new films that added to the far corners of the MCU to flesh things out a bit. One such film is Eternals (2021), based on legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby's trippy space opera from the mid-70s and directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, The Rider). With a sprawling international cast, the film focuses on a group of ten immortals known as The Eternals, who are sent to Earth in 5000 B.C. to protect the humans of the planet from a group of bloodthirsty monsters known as Deviants. The Eternals are comprised of Ajak (Salma Hayek), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), and Thena (Angelina Jolie), and after defeating the Deviants, they are left on Earth to live among the humans, though they are instructed never to interfere in human matters. This comes to a head, however, when Deviants reemerge in the present day with a seemingly new mission to destroy humanity, bringing the surviving Eternals out of hiding and into action for the first time in 2000 years. The film had a lot of firsts for a Marvel movie like the first on-screen sex scene—a brief skinless flashback featuring Richard Madden and Gemma Chan—as well as the first openly gay superhero in Brian Tyree Henry's Phastos, who shares a steamy smooch with on-screen husband Haaz Sleiman! It may not be much, but it is Eternally sexy!
