The 1960's were a tumultous time in the good ol' USA.  With race relations, youth culture demanding their voices to be heard, and sweet bell bottoms (really, the fashion all around), the time period is one of the more interesting in contemporary history.  Lilies of the Field (1963) follows a jack of all trades handyman and ex-soldier (played by Oscar winner Sidny Poitier) as he looks for work in the southwest.  While looking for water, he stumbles upon a farm inhabited by a group of nuns of Eastern German descent.  The mother superior persuades Poitier to fix a small hole in their roof, which he does.  When he asks for payment, the mother superior throws a bible verse at him, which Poitier volleys back with one of his own.  At a stalemate, Poitier agrees to stay on and fix the farm, getting paid in food and water, while the other nuns believe the man to be sent from God to build a chapel.  We'd tend to agree with the nuns, as in one scene a shirtless Poitier splashes cold water over his shirtless, muscular torso.  The film is notable as Poitier won an Oscar for the role, becoming the first African American man to do so.
