Review

Faces (1968) is the classic black-and-white drama from John Cassavetes about a middle-aged man named Richard Forst who suddenly wants to change the course of his life. He leaves his wife Maria for a young woman named Jeannie Rapp who does not want to just be friends. This forces him to leave Maria in order to pursue a life with Jeannie, but his wife meanwhile gets to moving on as well. Maria gets seduced by a nice young man named Chet whom she decides to try a fling with. Both of the married halves are in little situations with younger people in this film that explores what bored, wealthy, middle-aged people might want to do in order to get a few quick thrills in their life in order to ignore how meaningless it all is for them. There is a lot of lore to this film considering it is one of Cassavetes' greats. The original cut was allegedly six hours, but thankfully the famous director got it down to just over two. Imagine what was cut! Was it nudity? We will never really know, but we can all thank the film gods that one of the male stars takes off his shirt at the very least. Seymour Cassel plays the hottie from Detroit named Chet who takes off his shirt in one seductive scene that leaves us breathless. We only see his strong chest and his face, but we definitely would love to see more from Mr. Cassel. We want to Seymour hiney!
