Not all movies live up to their titles, but we can honestly say The Trip (1967) does just that. Not to be confused with the gay rom-com The Trip (2002) or the Norwegian thriller The Trip (2021), this trippy pic offers a snapshot of the psychedelic counterculture in America during the radical sixties. As expected, Roger Corman’s indie flick features a who’s who of who’s cool: Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, and an uncredited Peter Bogdanovich. Alternatively titled A Lovely Sort of Death (an intentional play on LSD), the drama was written by none other than Jack Nicholson. It follows Paul Groves (Fonda), a Hollywood television director who experiences a major personal crisis when he realizes his wife (Susan Strasberg) is cheating on him. As such, he tries to get his life back on track by taking a road trip and several acid trips with Glenn (Salli Sachse) and Max (Hopper). Along the way, we are treated to views of Peter and Dennis in various states of undress. The hot upper bods on Mr. Fonda and Mr. Hopper can be seen in a few scenes. If that’s not titillating enough, Peter reveals his rump by the pool. Even though his character is freaking out during a skinny dip, the sexy sight still might make a splash on screen — and in your jeans! This cult hit only cost $100,000 to make but wound up earning $10 million at the box office as well as countless interest in audience members’ spank banks!
