Mountains of the Moon (1990) tells the story of Sir Richard Francis Burton (Patrick Bergin) and Lieutenant John Hanning Speke (Iain Glen) as they search for the source of the Nile in the name of Queen Victoria's British Empire. Few are aware that Burton, a vaunted historical figure, was not just an explorer, scholar and poet, he was a massive hornball who translated some of the world's most erotic literature, such as The Karma Sutra, Arabian Nights and The Perfume Garden. But all that sexual exploration pales in comparison to what he did in 1854, when he set off looking for the source of the Nile alongside the ultra-moral, kind of boring military man he was assigned to work with. That puts Burton and Speke in the face of danger, with Burton taking a spear to the jaw and the whole thing getting cancelled. No worries, three years later and the gang set out again. But this time, Speke runs into Lake Victoria while Burton hangs out with the Natives and their leader Ngolo (Bheki Tonto Ngema). When the pair return to England, Speke declares that he alone discovered that Lake Victoria is the source of the Nile, despite the pair promising neither would try to take sole credit no matter what happened. Perhaps motivated by jealousy, Burton (wrongly) declares that he disagrees about Lake Victoria being the source at all. Needless to say, this drives a wedge between the pair and it's not long before they're sniping at each other in the media. Burton's the more charismatic one, which is why he has such a hard time convincing the world that Speke is wrong and he's right, even though he was. He'll meet a tragic end just before he was about to face off in a huge debate with Speke. What's the source of Mr. Man's raging hard on? That would be the scene where Bernard Hill, playing the legendary Dr. David Livingstone, pulls down his pants to compare scars with our explorers. Since one scar is on his ass, we get to see him bend over and show some skin! Consequently, we've mapped out the mountains of his moon!
