Set at an all girls Catholic school in the small town of Fort William, Scotland in the mid 1990s, Our Ladies (2019) is your typical coming of age story, directed by Doc Hollywood and Memphis Belle helmer Michael Caton-Jones. The film is based on a novel titled "The Sopranos" by Alan Warner, but the film couldn't be called that for obvious reasons. It centers around the school's choir, which is selected to perform at a prestigious competition in Edinburgh, taking many of these teenage girls outside of their hometown for the first in their lives. While the school's administration is intent on keeping them focused on the competition, the hormonal young women of course want to cut loose and party, drink some booze, snog some boys, and break all the rules they're made to follow at school. Interestingly enough, the book was first optioned in the late 90s by Caton-Jones, but it took him more than 20 years to get the film made, creating a period piece when it was initially meant to be a contemporary story. Nevertheless, the film captures the spirit of the 90s quite nicely, giving us some well rounded portraits of young women which may not break any new ground, but certainly don't blaze a bold new trail in storytelling. The highlight of the film comes 59 minutes into the flick as several of the girls go looking for one of their missing classmates and stumble into a house where Stuart Martin is doing handstand push-ups fully nude and sporting a massive erection! Our Ladies aren't the only ones getting a real eyeful in this scene!
