Review

When it comes to avant-garde horror surrealism, there are a couple of names to think of but only one true modern master of the mind melters, Alejandro Jodorowsky.  The Chilean/French renaissance "mad man" of film, literature, painting, poetry, you name it comes at us with this 1989 horror movie, Santa Sangre, that will scare the hell out of you!  This film follows a circus performer, Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky), who is also the son of the knife-thrower and the trapeze artist, upon his release from a stay at the old mental institution.  His mom is also the leader of a pseudo-cult that worships an armless orphan child.  When Fenix's mother finds out that his father, Ogro (Guy Stockwell) is having an affair with the tattooed lady, she decides that the best revenge is to melt his cock and balls off with acid.  So dad gets back at her by chopping off her arms...  Which then in turn makes her circus act much more interesting because now she is the armless lady who uses her son's arms to perform!  The only problem is, she is also using her son's arms to kill any woman that she sees as a threat to them.  Yep, you have read all of this correctly and are now rattling around inside the mind of Jodorowsky.  This movie has it all; Pimps, heavy set prostitutes, multiple armless circus performers, good old fashioned genital meltings, mannequin mothers, clowns, tiny elephants, and luckily for us, Axel Jodorowsky's cock, balls, and butt as well as Guy Stockwell in the buff. Buckle up, maybe take an edible, and try not to go too far down this rabbit hole of surrealism!
