Review

In Starred Up (2013), Eric Love (Jack O'Connell) is the new kid on the block — the cell block that is. Based on Jonathan Asser’s experiences as a therapist at HM Prison Wandsworth, this gritty flick follows an incarcerated teen who is “starred up” from a juvenile facility to a high security adult prison due to bad behavior. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree since Eric’s father Neville Love (Ben Mendelsohn) resides in the same prison. Apparently, critics and fans loved the portrayals of these Love criminals because Jack nabbed the Best Actor award at the Dublin International Film Festival. If that’s not impressive enough, Ben was named Best Supporting Actor at the British Independent Film Awards, which acknowledged the pic with nominations for Best Indie Film, Best Director (David Mackenzie) and another Best Supporting Actor (Rupert Friend). The ensemble cast of characters includes Deputy Governor Haynes (Sam Spruell), Dennis Spencer (Peter Ferdinando), Tyrone (David Ajala), Officer White (Duncan Airlie James), and the suggestively-named Officer Johnson (Ian Beattie). If you think watching a movie set in a prison is grim, think again. Thanks to the leading man’s openness, we are treated to views of Mr. O’Connell’s O’Chest and O’Caboose via a thorough check-in exam. Better yet, we get to see Jack’s junk when he strips, struts, and squats. Now, that’s what we call an overexposed actor! During a later locker room brawl, the naked babe bares his back, sack and shaft, leaving us in awe of the Brit’s penal code!
