If you’re looking for a lyrical pic, check out Sunset Song (2015) — not to be confused with Brian’s Song (1971), 9 Songs (2004), Love Songs (2007), The Last Song (2010), Swan Song (2021) or any other songs you’ve seen or heard. Under the pen and direction of revered British auteur Terence Davies, this artsy drama blends 70mm and digital footage to bring Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s same-named novel to the screen. The period piece follows Scottish lass Chris Guthrie (Agyness Deyn) from 1910 to 1916. Through various means, she attempts to gain her independence from her abusive father (Peter Mullan), against very long odds and a great deal of setbacks (including the loss of her mother and young siblings). After her brother Will (Jack Greenlees) flees the farm, Chris takes it on with the help of her new loving husband Ewan Tavendale (Kevin Guthrie). Once they have a son, he must leave to fight in World War I. But when the suffering spouse returns, things don’t go well for Chris since her hubby has a chubby that won’t take no for an answer. As such, Mr. Guthrie flashes his bare back, some of his sack and all of his ass while having his forceful way with his lady. Kevin’s character may enjoy a happy ending in this scene but later he’ll be shot for deserting the army. Although Sunset Song depicts the challenges of life and death, it’s told in a visually poetic way. Plus, ogling Guthrie’s rump will have you humming!
