What are the limits of love? That's the question posed by the weepy drama Supernova (2020) about a long-term gay couple dealing with an unfathomable future. Semi-retired novelist Tusker (Stanley Tucci) and his partner of 20 years Sam (Colin Firth), an acclaimed classical pianist, are embarking on a trip across England's Lake District to see old friends who haven't been together in many years. While the get together is obviously something they've been looking forward to, these long time companions are staring at an uncertain future as Tusker has recently been diagnosed with early onset dementia. Sam is set to perform a show at a venue in the area, so they gather at the home of some old friends for one last good time together before Tusker's condition prevents any further good times. From nearly the very beginning of the film, it's clear that both Sam and Tusker are keeping secrets from one another but, with so little time left, are they willing to turn minor offenses into major blow-outs, or is it best to keep the past in the past? Both Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci give wonderfully rich, lived-in performances in this film that's heavy on the melodrama but light on skin! The two share a lot of time together in their underwear, laying in bed, talking, kissing, canoodling, cuddling, and the like, but this isn't a movie about hot and heavy sex between a randy young couple of guys, this is a heartbreaking tale of the end of a relationship. It's about how far we're willing to go for the one we love and not likely to lead to the type of Kleenex usage we normally endorse here at Mr. Man!
