The Good Lord Bird (2020)

The Good Lord Bird (2020) is something totally different in this slightly comedic story that is loosely based on the real story of abolitionist John Brown. We follow a runaway slave named Onion (who is fictional, by the way) who disguises himself as a woman so he can better be in disguise. Onion winds up joining Brown's group of abolitionist soldiers and finds refuge with them as they try to take down slave owners in Kansas in the 1860s. We follow this band of abolitionists as they plan and lead up to the 1869 Army depot raid at Harpers Ferry which is often considered a pivotal citing incident of the American Civil War. This is a star-studded cast which includes Daveed Diggs as Frederick Dougls (yes, the hot dude from Hamilton) and everyone's favorite zaddy Ethan Hawke plays John Brown. He's a religious zealot who wants to wage a bloody war against slavery. Hey, at least he's on the right side, even if everyone thinks he's nuts.
