Review

The Name of the Rose (2019) is an Italian historical procedural based on the massively successful 1980 novel about a murder at an Italian monastery. While the book had been adapted into a 1986 Sean Connery movie of the same name, this adaptation was an eight-episode miniseries on Rai 1, which meant it could explore the full story in a way that movie couldn't. John Turturro stars as William of Baskerville, a Franciscan Friar living in 1327 Italy. He and his novice Adso (Damian Hardung) head to a Benedictine abbey in Northern Italy to do some philosophizing about the church's role in ending poverty. Also heading to the same place is the religious inquisitor Bernardo Gui (Rupert Everett), who is kind of a badass prone to violence. It's supposed to be a pretty relaxed religious business trip, but when they all get there, they're met with a really sketchy story about how a dude just fell out of a window to his death. The windows don't really work the way they'd have to for the falling tale to be true, so none of them believe that tale. Soon enough none of them care about religion of poverty and they're all trying to crack the case. But some things are better left not known, so our monks may not want to get involved at all. Watch for secret passages, hidden messages and even claims of demonic possession in this crazy flick! There's nothing hidden about our love for a monk that's a hunk, so Mr. Man feels pretty confident noting that Damien Hardung will get your dong hard when he slips off his shirt to show his chiseled muscles. He's young, thin, and has the kind of abs that could have you filling a monastery with pleasure rolls! The name on everyone's tongue is Damien Hardung because The Name of the Rose will definitely make it rise!
