They Have Escaped (2014)

The odd Finnish drama follows Joni (Teppo Manner), a shy military recruit that has a stutter that ultimately forces him to go AWOL. When the authorities catch up with him, the runaway is forced to serve out his military contract at a halfway house for troubled teens. While Joni gets rejected by the rejects at the reject house, he eventually befriends Raissa (Roosa Soderholm), and abrasive punk rocker with bleached blonde hair and raccoon eyes. Together, the two troublemakers steal a car and escape, burning a trail to Raissa’s parents’ house where she claims is a butt load of money hidden in a picture box. When the fugitive couple fails to find the loot, and Raissa’s parents call the police, the two hightail it out into the woods where their luck about runs out when they experience some backwoods Deliverance (1972)-type of shit.

In two surreal moments of arthouse filmmaking, we get to see Teppo’s tail as he drinks from a stream while wearing a deer’s head (what?), and he shows it all as he and his gal pal push a oversized pill up a hill. These are two images that won’t escape your memory any time soon!
