Review

The musical drama Beyond the Lights (2014) proves that if you open up your heart you’ll find your voice and a hunky guy not too far behind it. Noni Jean (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is a hot new pop star on the scene that just got hotter thanks to her winning a Billboard Music Award without even having an album available for downloading. Noni is primed to enter the world of super-stardom, but the pressures of fame and the music business lead her to take a suicidal leap from the twelfth floor of her Beverly Hills hotel room. Didn’t see that coming! But when Kaz (Nate Parker), a hunky LAPD police office-turned pop diva babysitter, comes to her rescue, the two quickly fall into a steamy romance. Despite her handlers telling her to focus on her career rather than on love, Kaz, putting aside his political ambitions, to the chagrin of his father (Danny Glover), stands next to her and helps her to become the star she was meant to be. Ah, how sweet! There’s no way anyone can expect Noni to leave Nate Parker behind, especially if they get to see him with his shirt off, like we get to in two steamy scenes. Perfection be thy name!
