Mismatched cop teams are popular in movies. Take Sgts. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) in the Lethal Weapon franchise (1987-1998); Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) in 21 Jump Street (2011) and 22 Jump Street (2014); and FBI agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and Det. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) in The Heat (2013). But before these humorous buddy flicks were hitting it big at the box office, TV viewers were tuning in to watch Officer Jon Baker (Larry Wilcox) and Llewelyn “Poncho” Pocherello (Erik Estrada) on CHiPs (1977-1983). Like Starsky and Hutch (1975-1979) which was rebooted via the movie Starsky & Hutch (2004), the crime series CHiPs received a comical makeover for the big screen in 2017. In the same-named pic, director Dax Shepard plays Officer Jonathan “Jon” Baker. He works for the California Highway Patrol as an undercover FBI agent — along with Lieutenant Raymond Kurtz (Vincent D’Onofrio), Officer Ava Perez (Rosa Salazar), Officer Lindsey Taylor (Jessica McNamee), Captain Jane Lindel (Jane Kaczmarek), and Sergeant Gail Hernandez (Maya Rudolph). Baker’s partner happens to be the stern and straitlaced Officer Poncherello (Michael Peña). While Jon wants to have fun, Ponch joined the force to get his life on the right course. Will they be able to set aside their differences to catch the bad guys? We’re not sure, but we do know Mr. Shepard shows off his naked T&A! The movie also includes the thrusting bare butt on Tate Simms. Yes, he puts the hips in CHiPs!
