A young 19th century man with dreams of attending a prestigious university is thrust into a life as a stone mason with a bride he doesn’t love due to forces beyond his control in Jude (1996). The somber Michael Winterbottom directed film is based on the controversial 1895 Thomas Hardy novel that sent the UK into an uproar for suggesting the lower classes are just as smart as the higher ones, they just don't have the same access to education. The horror! Winterbottom's adaption brings out a spectacular performance from Christopher Eccleston in the titular role as Jude Fawley. Jude dreams of heading to the big city and making it as an upper-class gentleman. But since he's broke, he gets rejected from the fancy schools and is stuck living as a stonemason with a homely wife (Rachel Griffiths). Refusing to accept that life with his pig farmer's daughter wife, he moves to the city and falls for his hot and smart cousin Sue (Kate Winslet). The two have a steamy love affair that results in a few out of wedlock kids, since Sue marries Jude's teacher Phillotson (Liam Cunningham) and lives her own unhappy life. Think this one is going to end with Jude going off to college, marrying Sue and living happily ever after? Guess again. Jude will have you in a terrible mood with its comically depressing ending. Featuring two Doctors from Doctor Who: Eccleston and a young David Tennant, Jude might be best known for being the first time Kate Winslet went nude, but Mr. Eccleston does some showing himself! Christopher gives us a randy helping of his sensual skin and small but scrumptious ass while he's lying in bed with Kate, before doing the deed with Miss Winslet. Damn Jude, put in that work, dude! It so sexy that you might just finish this flick with the famous Beatle’s lick stuck in your head. Hey Jude, indeed!
