The German political thriller Meschugge (1998) aka The Giraffe is set during World War II and follows Lena Katz (Maria Schrader), a New York-based granddaughter of a Jewish chocolate factory owner, Eliah Goldberg (Lukas Ammann), whose premises are burned down by some anti-Semites. The news of the charred chocolate building reaches German émigré Rahel Fish (Stephanie Roth Haberle), who calls her lawyer son David (Dani Levy) to tell him that Eliah is her father, long believed to be dead. Meanwhile, Lena, visiting her mother (Nicole Heesters) at the hotel she’s dwelling in while visiting New York, finds Rahel dying in the hallway. As she is rushed to the hospital, David and Rahel meet for the first time at the hospital and slowly discover the linked background that goes back a half a century. Heavy stuff. Somewhere in the middle of the film, Jeffrey Wright manages to flaunt his junk in a post-poke moment of relaxation in bed. Nice!
