The old police procedural formula gets a fresh spin thanks to the neo-blaxploitation antics in Rebel (2017). Not to be confused with the action adventure movie Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023), this BET crime series focuses on officers of color who deal with internal and external conflicts as they work at a time when police brutality is rife. As a Black woman, Oakland Officer Rebecca “Rebel” Cole (Danielle Moné Truitt) plays by the rules because she knows she has to be even better than expectations. But when her brother is killed due to police misconduct, Rebel takes matters into her own hands and quits her job. In an effort to right wrongs in the name of justice, she becomes a private investigator who no longer does things by the book. Of course, she should arrest bad boy Thompson “Mack” McIntyre (Brandon Quinn) for having a killer body. Thankfully, we get to admire the shirtless man’s awesome abs in episode 7. This gorgeous guy looks like he was cut from stone which explains why Mr. Man feels rock hard! The short-lived show also includes Angela Ko, Derek Ray, Jerry Kernion, Mandy June Turpin, Method Man, Michael Masini, Mykelti Williamson, Patrick Labyorteaux, and the skin on Giancarlo Esposito. As Charles Gold, the latter actor shines when he lounges around without his shirt on in episode 7. Unfortunately, this sexy series was canceled after one season. Perhaps it would have been renewed if it flashed more flesh. What a crime!
