Review

Writer-director-star Warren Beatty's cinematic love-letter to the birth of Soviet totalitarianism, Reds (1981), received a deluxe DVD treatment in honor of it turning twenty-five. Beatty plays real-life journalist John Reed, who covers the Russian revolution from the front lines and falls in love with a married woman, fellow American lefty Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton). Inspired by Reed, Louise leaves her husband and joins her new fling in New York where they meet anarchist and author Emma Goldman (Maureen Stapleton), and rabble-rousing playwright Eugene O’Neill (Jack Nicholson). While there isn’t much in the way of nudity here, a young Nicholson does show off a distant view of his ass when he takes a dip in the ocean. Now if only Jack would dip his wick into something a little more sensual.
