In The Assistant, quiet bookbinder Joseph Marti snaps one day when his overbearing supervisor shoves an unsalvageable book in his face. In this surrealistic adaptation of Robert Walser’s novel of the same name, no one notices Joseph’s absence, and he finds himself swept into the early 1900s, working at a mansion as the assistant to eccentric inventor Tobler. Before long, Joseph is doing it all - handling books, mail, and even winning over the lady of the house. Ever the obedient helper, he follows every command, even as Tobler’s grand business schemes unravel and the family's finances plummet. In addition, the Mr. and Mrs. of the household begin to fight, leaving Joseph to consider once again who he is, and what his place is in this world. This Kafkaesque flick is hardly anywhere to be found, but our dedication to dudity means that we not only sleuthed out the crazy nude dance sequence here, but are able to ID the uncredited man who shows his cock - Roman Gancarczyk - because we care. Forget the existential crisis, this is a sexistential crisis!
