Remaking an iconic movie isn’t a good idea since it’s seldom a charm the second time around. Director Guy Ritchie proved he’s no Lina Wertmüller with his 2002 version of her romantic satire Swept Away (1974). Diane English’s The Women (2008) was a flop opposed to George Cukor’s same-named 1939 romp. That goes double for Neil LaBute’s 2006 reboot of the haunting British flick The Wicker Man (1973). Did we mention Flatliners (2017) flatlined with the critics compared to Flatliners (1990) and The Pink Panther (2006) was a joke (not in a good way) next to the comedic classic The Pink Panther (1963)? And whoever thought the lightening of Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway (1972) starring Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw would strike again with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger was obviously mistaken. Nevertheless, Roger Donaldson directed The Getaway (1994). Based on the 1958 novel by Jim Thompson, this R rated pic follows Carter “Doc” McCoy (Baldwin), his wife Carol (Basinger) and their buddy Rudy Travis (Michael Madsen) — all of whom are on the run from the law. Needless to say, it takes a special kind of bravery to remake a film that’s revered. As such, Mr. Baldwin knew nudity would be his only chance at success — especially since he was at the height of his swarthy machismo at the time. Consequently, the hottie rocks a pair of boxers before showing some side butt and pubes during a steamy sex scene. No one would want to getaway from that flesh flashing!
