Review

The Tale (2018) is a drama from writer and director Jennifer Fox that stars Laura Dern as a female filmmaker who is investigating her own childhood memories to reexamine her first sexual experiences and try to figure out what really happened there. She is attempting to make a documentary about her childhood and life in general, but the more that she digs around into her past, the more she realizes that it is possible things did not happen the way that she initially thought they did. As a child, she got very close to her female horse trainer and her husband but that relationship wound up being dangerous to her life as a whole. When she was a child, she got way too close to this couple and wrote a short story about a "romance" based on this relationship when she was just a child. Her mom finds the story and tells her to look into this again and discourages her from viewing this encounter as a loving relationship. That's the basis of the film and it is certainly tense. Jason Ritter plays Bill, the male half of this couple, who shows off his shirtless body as he sits on the couch next to the little girl. Common is also in the movie as Martin, Laura's lover as an adult. He is certainly fully grown when he is shirtless as she rides him and again sans shirt as he brushes his teeth. His abs are nothing but Common and that is the Tale that we will tell.
