The Crying Game (1992)

Whenever watching The Crying Game (1992), Mr. Man goes through a bunch of tissues. While it may not be a tearjerker, it’s definitely a jerker! Neil Jordan’s BAFTA-winning crime drama follows Fergus (Stephen Rea), an IRA volunteer who helps kidnap a British soldier (Forest Whitaker). When things don’t go as planned, Fergus hightails it to London, changes his name and gets involved with the soldier’s lover Dil (Jaye Davidson). Dil knows nothing about Fergus’s past and Fergus has no clue about what Dil is packing below. As such, some genuinely gripping scenes follow suit regarding Dil’s birthday suit. In other words, when the drawers are lowered, the freak flag is raised! Back in 1992, seeing a trans-identified actor present as a woman put the thrills into this thriller. Davidson looks like a lady and fooled a lot of people when the film was first released. Speaking of releases, you may lose a load when Dil finally decides to reveal some skin. As Jaye opens his robe, the camera pans down his smooth dark torso to expose black pubes, tanned balls and a meaty man stick where something else was rumored to be. Surprise! In addition to nabbing Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Rea, Best Supporting Actor for Davidson, and Best Film Editing, the movie won Best Original Screenplay. In fact, the British Film Institute once considered The Crying Game the 26th greatest English pic of all time. Of course, Jaye makes this flick number 1 to us!
