Review

Pretty much anything starring John Malkovich is practically a fever dream anyway, at least since Being John Malkovich (1999), and this indie flick from 2020 is definitely on the far side of the Malkovich spectrum of nutty cuckoo time bananas!  This movie follows Malkovich as Wes Tauros, an eccentric trillionaire, yes we said that correctly, Trillionaire with a capital T, who lives in a mountain top mansion overlooking downtown Los Angeles and struggling with his own bizarre behavior of hunting for a replacement for his dead wife and child.  So he clearly does what every super wealthy person does, cultivate a world where his butler finds and curates women for him to marry, and people to collect for his dungeon...  Juxtapose that with Josh Hartnett as a struggling writer on the verge of a divorce, who has a slight obsession with Navajo culture, and he frequently encroaches on their world by going to the desert in his Jeep, to plunk his writing desk down and putting pen to paper.  These two have their worlds intertwine as the bizarre and sometimes surreal story plays out amidst Bérénice Marlohe taking over as Malkovich's wife doppelganger in the castle above the city.  On the plus side of this wild story drawing on Navajo folk lore and the insanity of modern American, we get to see that Josh Hartnett still has it just like he did 20 years ago as he spends the majority of his time in the desert, sans shirt.  He even torches his Jeep with just a pair of jeans on and it's makes it feel like 2005 all over again because he hasn't aged a day!  Talk about someone who belongs in the Valley of the Gods!
