Review

The emotional drama Vincent & Theo (1990) is yet another cinematic attempt to capture the passionate and often turbulent relationship between genius Dutch Expressionist painter Vincent van Gogh (Tim Roth) and his sympathetic, art dealing brother, Theo (Paul Rhys). As we’re often reminded, Vincent’s artwork was largely ignore throughout his lifetime, despite the best efforts of Theo, only selling a handful of paintings and garnering very little critical acclaim. Vincent’s inability to make it as a painter, combined with his mental illness, complicated his relationship with his brother and often dragged Theo to the depths of despair, ultimately inhibiting his career as an art dealer. While you’ll get plenty of emotion from this BBC-produced flick, you’ll get absolutely no nudity, even though Paul Rhys is minus his clothes in a darkly-lit scene.
