Review

The Kenneth Anger-directed fantasy drama Lucifer Rising (1972) develops when a volcanic eruption awakens the goddess Isis (Myriam Gibril), causing her to call to her husband Osiris (Donald Cammell). You with us? In a room far away from the eruption, Adept (Haydn Couts) wakes up, sits on a throne in his apartment (because everyone has a throne in their abode), and in a psychedelically dumb scene, he throws a spear at a woman hanging out in a forest far, far away, whom it appears that he wounds. After Adept has done his damage, he slowly gets into the bathtub and begins to wash himself. Later on, the moon awakens the goddess Lilith (Marianne Faithfull), which is soon followed by a magic ritual that’s used to conjure up Lucifer (Leslie Huggins). Just when things couldn’t get any more odd, it seems as though the rising of Lucifer causes flying saucers to appear over Egypt. While the short flick is heavy in symbolism, it’s a bit light on male nudity. There are two artsy scenes of butt-baring, penis flashing by Haydn Couts that will have your sexual temperature rising faster than the titular dark overlord!
