Another romantic comedy from the Oscar-nominated director of Moonstruck, Norman Jewison, the 1994 film Only You throws future MCU costars Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. into a story about love, destiny, and frankly, immature manipulation. Tomei plays Faith, who was convinced as a young girl by both a Ouiji board and a fortune teller that she would marry a man named Damon Bradley. Years later when she’s about to wed a podiatrist named Dwayne, an old friend of his calls to congratulate them on his way to Italy and his name just happens to be, yep, Damon Bradley. So Faith runs off to Venice to find him and encounters Robert Downey Jr, who claims to be Damon Bradley. The two share a magically evening together which abruptly ends when Downey Jr admits his name is actually Peter, prompting Faith to continue her search for the real Damon Bradley while Peter tries to discourage her because he is now in love with her. She seemingly finds the real Damon Bradley in a young, long-haired, and very ripped Billy Zane as he emerges from a swimming pool in a clingy, wet bathing suit like an aloof, oiled up, modern Mr. Darcy, but that turns out to be a sham orchestrated by Peter. And that’s not even the biggest lie of the movie, yet somehow Faith, true to her name, is still able to not give up on men entirely and ride off into the sunset with Peter after realizing she loves him. Hopefully Billy Zane’s beefcake didn’t take a boat back to the U.S., those trips generally don’t go well for him.
