One great appeal of films from Australia is that the creative talents Down Under look at the world from a vantage point that can strike us who live in the upper latitudes as charmingly and piercingly inside-out. The idiosyncratic genius of Proof (1991) starts with its protagonist, a photographer (Hugo Weaving) who happens to be blind. He only takes pictures to assure himself that the seen universe does, in fact, coincide with how it has been described to him by his sighted associates. His mischievous housekeeper rearranges the blind shutterbug's furniture to prove that there is no certainty in this life. The real highlight of this quirky gem is bit of beefcake Russell Crow, who plays Hugo's best pal. The Proof is in the pudding 1-hour 12-minutes in when he bares his muscular butt while humping a gal on the couch. Nice land down under, Russell!
