The Crazy Stranger (1997)

Real life Romany director Tony Gatlif explored his ethnic roots with the French, Romany, and Romanian language flick The Crazy Stranger (1997). After hearing a beautiful female voice on a cassette left behind by his dead father, French fella Stéphane (Romain Duris) heads to Romania to track down the mysterious folk singer whose music means so much to him. Once there, he is taken under the wing of Izidor (Izidor Serban), a Romany drunk who lets him live with him free of charge. Believing that Izidor can help him crack the case of the folk singer's identity, Stéphane stays with the Romany people and learns their ways, though they think he's insane for his kooky antics and wild quest. Eventually he falls in love with a member of the community named Sabina (Rona Hartner), but when one of the hot-headed Romany dudes named Adriani (Florin Moldovan) ends up killing a guy, things go South, fast. Is Stéphane willing to stick around when things really get crazy, or is he going to flee the scene and give up on his finding the folk singer dream? A fascinating study of gypsy life and the societal pressure brought to bear upon them by Romania at large, The Crazy Stranger isn't exactly a skin sextravaganza, but it does have one crazy hot nude scene!
